Custom Solo Canoe

10-Sept-06 -- Here are some older shots of the sanding, notches for the stems, and fitted stems.

29-Aug-06 -- We had some camera / computer problems, so here is a picture of the completed hull (old one, but shows the progress).  We will try to get caught up as time permits.  Sorry about the color, but I had the big roll-up door open and the sun played tricks with the camera.

25-Aug-06 -- Sorry!  No new pictures until Sunday (which didn't work out now did it?

19-Aug-06 -- The last three days have been a bit tough.  I was trying to complete this boat with full length strips for the most part, but there is a really tough "shoulder" at the frame just aft of mid-ships.  I can't seem to get a strip to make the complicated bend and stay on track to match the frame going around the bend toward the bilge, so I am going to have to use a couple of strips near this spot that are not full length to try and ease the curve.  It was such a frustrating time, I spent the weekend installing all the strips that will become the nice sheer line.  There are quite a few on the "4 corners" to make this work due to the strong sweep of the ends of this canoe.  Here are a couple of pictures to show the detail and one that lets you really start to see the full boat.

13-Aug-06 -- Man!  There are about 4 strips that I believe are the hardest part of the whole process.  Those strips that round the corner of the bilge and start to be more horizontal at the mid section and still vertical at the ends.  These require all the clamps you can spare and a technique that I learned from Nick's kayak building board a few years back.  Just use a scrap of a strip and some plain old masking tape to give the strip some support while the glue dries.

11-Aug-06 -- Some really tough strips, but not as hard as the next few to come..

08-Aug-06 -- More strips!!  At this point about a third of the strips are on the boat.  These are the easy ones, so today I am going to start on the harder ones.

07-Aug-06 -- The stripping process goes FAST - so keep an eye on this page.  Here you see 8 strips on already (4 each side).  I spoke with the future owner of this boat today and he wants a standard thwart up front (a very good decision given the shape of this boat), so the thwart shown below will not go in this boat.  I will post a picture of the standard thwart as soon as it is done.  Here you can see the very consistent color of the cedar that came out of Canada for this boat.  A great job.  I now have a new wood supplier, so let me know if any of you out there need some strips.

05-Aug-06 -- Here you can see the inner stems in place and shaped.  The first strip is also in place in this picture, but the strips visible at the top are just to hold the frames square until enough strips are in place to do the job.  Sorry about the quality of these pictures, but the shop door was open and the light is a little off.  Those of you who have seen the big shop know that I am not in that location any longer.  My wife and I decided to open a wine store here in Billings and the big shop had to go, so I am in a 20 x 20 shop until my new shop is built.

02-Aug-06 -- Sometimes the shape of the boat requires quite a bit of work before you even bend the first plank!  I had to build some creative jigs to set up the ends on this boat.  Here you see the final frame assembly for the stern and the laminated inner stem.  Also here is the finished seat and one possible thwart option.  The designer didn't show a shaped thwart, but I thought it might look good on the finished boat.  Keep watching here as planking starts in a couple of days.

23-Jul-06 -- Here are a couple of pictures with the bulk of the frames on the strongback.  Steaming and bending continues stems today.

19-Jul-06 -- We are working on a new double paddle canoe designed by the owner.  This will be a great little boat and we will post pictures as we can.  The frames are cut out and most are on the strongback.  We are cutting out the Ash, steaming, and bending the stems today.
